What is Frunchy?

Frunchy was born out of "healthy envy" when I first saw Steam's recap. I watched it and thought, "How nice," and wondered why YouTube didn't have something similar. Then I realized that I have YouTube's history turned off—and it’s still off, haha. After that, I wondered why Crunchyroll didn't have one. This was around 2020, and I thought, "It would be really cool if Crunchyroll had one." And, like any good programmer (haha), if it doesn't exist, you make it, because we're the kind of people who solve problems (ha, ha, ha).

So, in 2020 I started working on the Chrome extension. I met with a friend to help me with the design, since I wanted it to be informative and impactful. After I had a POC showing that I could read Crunchyroll's history and ingest it into Falco (yes, I used Falco at the time), I was satisfied and told myself, "Well, I'll pick this up again later..."

Then came procrastination, more work, more POCs, and Frunchy was left on the shelf 😕

In 2025, Crunchyroll created a nice recap, but I think it only appeared on my phone once and never again... At that point I thought, "Oh, man, I should have made it."

In 2026, I embraced AI. I started using it on work projects, and everything just kept flowing. I remembered Frunchy and thought, "That might be nice," and now we have Frunchy 😊

The decision to build Frunchy (I think you can still call it programming when you do it with an agent) helped me finally tackle something I'd been putting off for a long time: getting my own server. I already had the lacalabaza.xyz domain, but I still needed the server. I had Hetzner on my list, but by the time I checked, they had discontinued the Cost Optimized instances. So began my search for VMs, and in the end I settled on Netcup.

Then came more questions and answers, which led to an avalanche of new projects I'm really enjoying. I'll talk about them in more depth in the future. The projects are Umbral, Caravana, and Megáfono.

Frunchy is currently invite-only. I'm testing it with some friends. The code is open source and available in the GitHub repository, where you'll find instructions on how to install it.

Here's the Browsers extension repository.

Cheers.
